STAR Leisure, Cardiff - Vaughan Sound

Vaughan Sound has installed public address, voice alarm and induction loop systems as part of the £6m STAR Community Hub development in Cardiff.

The new leisure centre opens this month and replaces the existing one on Splott Road. It boasts a five-lane, 25 metre swimming pool with wheelchair access, gymnasium and fitness suite with free weights area, library, and multi-use community and leisure rooms for meetings, events and functions.

Vaughan Sound was appointed by T Clarke’s Bristol office to design, install and commission a zoned public address and background music system throughout the leisure centre, plus induction loops within the main reception, gym reception and interview rooms.

We specified a range of Cloud solutions, including an eight-zone venue mixer, PM8 paging microphone, plus multi-channel and 100VL amplifiers and transformers. These have been combined with a c-burn hard disc music system, featuring suitable tailored playlists to cover all types of leisure activities and classes.

The venue can also utilise a rack mounted CD/MP3/USB player or DAB/AM/FM tuner, with an audio feed also taken from the TV system in the gym.

Even sound distribution comes via RCF recessed ceiling loudspeakers, TOA PE-304 pendants and APART Mask 4T cabinets. Community R.15s complete with mounting yolks were fitted poolside, due to their ability to withstand the hostile conditions inherent in such an area.

Seven volume controls allow easy positioned around the complex all easy and intuitive management of public address announcement and background music levels in each zone.

Three Current Thinking counter loop amplifiers and gooseneck microphones were installed to cover both reception areas. Meanwhile the two interview rooms have both received ET60 induction loop amplifiers complete with ETCM ceiling microphones, commissioned and certified in line with BS EN 60118-4.

The new build leisure centre is Cardiff City Council’s first purpose-built hub as part of its Community Hubs programme. It will now serve residents of the local community, which includes Splott, Tremorfa, Adamsdown and Roath.
