Vaughan Sound supplied performance sound and stage lighting, audio-visual, and multimedia projection systems to Cowbridge Comprehensive – an impressive secondary school in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan.

Cowbridge Stage Lighting - Vaughan Sound

Client Overview

Situated in the Vale of Glamorgan, Cowbridge Comprehensive School serves a large rural area, housing 1300 secondary and sixth-form pupils.

The recently refurbished learning institution boasts impressive facilities including a sports hall, dance studio and 300-seat theatre, all of which are available to members of the local community, as well as students and staff.

Project Brief

Vaughan Sound was appointed by main contractor Carillion to design, supply and install a full range of stage lighting, sound, audio-visual and multimedia presentation equipment.

The installation was staged to cause the minimum of disruption to the day-to-day commitments of the staff and pupils.

Technical Solutions

Vaughan Sound supplied and installed five fully-furnished lighting bars over the stage and front of house in the school’s main hall.

A range of Selecon luminaires, Zero 88 dimmer packs and a user-friendly lighting console were specified to deliver a versatile stage lighting setup that employees can operate either from the control room or at stage level.

The area also benefitted from sound reinforcement equipment which was integrated with additional facility panels to provide microphone and peripheral audio-visual connectivity from various locations within the venue.

To equip the school for both presentations and productions, a multimedia projection system, complete with a large format retractable electric screen, was also fitted.

The audio-visual package can be managed at both the stage and control room where laptop and DVD inputs and AMX interfaces have been provided.

Additionally, portable systems, with a range of microphones for communal use throughout the school, were introduced to the dance, rehearsal and recording studios.

The industry-standard equipment included a mixing desk and headset radio microphones that can be utilised for both curricular and extracurricular activities.

The new lighting, sound, and audio-visual scheme was partly funded by the school using Tesco vouchers, which had been collected by parents and exchanged for educational merchandise.

Outcome

Vaughan Sound worked closely with Quantity Surveyor, Ron Maclean of Davis Langdon and Electrical Design Engineer, Peter Thomas of Arup to realise the successful technical scheme, which evolved as a result of other design coalition projects.

The school now benefits from a cost-effective solution that can be utilised for a variety of curricular and extracurricular events.

Comment

Vaughan Sound provided an excellent pre-installation process. The choice of equipment matched our needs, budget and future expectations exactly and they provided a very cost-effective solution.
